Salem is a special place. An oasis of tranquility within the heart of the East Bay. Cottages blend with apartments along a tree-lined street within our 5-acre campus. Reminiscent of a Scandinavian village, our community provides a family-focused, homelike atmosphere for almost 200 residents.

Take a stroll along our beautiful quarter-mile walking path and you will see our colorful rose garden and fresh-scented lemon trees. Enjoy our outdoor seating areas or come see our residents’ indoor garden, where a variety of flowers and vegetables are blooming.

Music is a big part of Salem Lutheran Home. It’s not unusual to find one of our residents or caregivers playing an impromptu "concert" on one of Salem's several pianos. In addition to music, residents keep busy with yoga or tai-chi lessons or surf the internet in our fully-equipped library.

As a licensed Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), we provide our residents with the full spectrum of residential and care options to meet changing needs: Independent living, 5 levels of assisted living care, a unique memory care program, and skilled nursing in our care center.

We offer our residents the peace of mind that Salem will be home, regardless of their changing needs. Couples needing different levels of care can see each other daily and enjoy living in the same community. Salem is the only CCRC to offer this as a month to month rental with no high buy in costs.

  • Assisted Living: Our custom care approach to assisted living allows residents, staff and other health care professionals to develop a service plan that meets the individual needs of each resident. Your needs do not have to fit into a pre-determined package of services. Services include medication management, assistance with personal care, escorts to dining and social programs and coordination of healthcare needs.
  • Residential Living: Aging is not a choice, but moving into a retirement community is, and Salem wants to make sure you have plenty of lifestyle choices. Choose one of our quaint cottages with up to three bedrooms or an apartment in Salem Woods with one or two bedrooms and a fully equipped kitchen. We also have compact studios and 2-room suites in our main building if you are looking for something smaller.

Create a garden on your private patio or enjoy the landscaped gardens and walking paths of our gated community.  We love pets – you are welcome to bring yours along with you. Bring your car along too. We’ll provide a garage space at no charge. Or leave the driving to us. We will transport you to medical appointments and shopping trips.

Let us take over the chores of housekeeping, maintenance and laundry while you enjoy some or all of your meals in our dining room, and nurture your mind, body and spirit with a choice or cultural, educational, wellness and spiritual programs. Salem offers you the security of knowing that as your needs change, you can receive assistance in your own unit with bathing, dressing, medication management and other daily activities. We also provide specialized dementia care programs and skilled nursing care in our Care Center.

Even after you have decided to come stay with us you have the flexibility of choosing a month-to-month or a continuing care contract. At Salem, it’s all about your choice.

  • The Terrace: This specialized program combines old-fashioned care and compassion with the most current programming techniques and research findings. Residents who suffer from Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia benefit from a residential setting and receive the care and services they need.

The Terrace specializes in Alzheimer’s and dementia care. Emphasis is placed on 24-hour care centered on the needs of each individual resident. We have a well-trained support staff, which includes a Program Director who is a licensed nurse, Therapeutic Activities Coordinator, and a Chaplain. We restore dignity to those suffering from memory loss in an atmosphere of kindness and respect. We have created a faith-based, loving atmosphere of caring, support and compassion for our residents through every stage of their memory loss.

Mental Stimulation: Several interactive therapies are used to assist each resident to remain actively engaged, mentally stimulated and calm. There is daily interaction with other residents, trained staff members, family and friends. Participation in a variety of art, music, games, crafts and professional entertainers provides mental engagement and entertainment.

Daily Life: Our Terrace residents enjoy a life filled with a full activities calendar, which includes lots of one-on-one interaction with each person. Each week is filled with art therapy, scenic drives, and gentle scenic walks through the garden, gardening with a horticultural therapist, ice cream socials, movies and interaction with our Assisted Living Residents. Our fully trained and licensed staff provides and monitors each resident’s medication in accordance with their physician’s orders.
