• Seminar - Advance Directives for Health Care
On Monday, August 26th and Tuesday, August 27th, Mercy Retirement and Care Center and Salem Lutheran Home will offer a seminar on preparing Advance Directives for Health Care. This free seminar is offered twice and is open to all residents, families, and interested friends. Each seminar will be presented by Dr. Susan Rubin, Ph.D. of The Ethics Practice and Dr. Susan Londerville, M.D. Mercy Retirement & Care Center: Salem Lutheran Home: Despite the fact that many people think their doctors and family know what their wishes are for medical care, including care at the end of life, research has shown that this is simply not the case. This seminar will provide concrete tools and guidance that will help residents to clearly convey their wishes to their families and health care providers. The seminar will include time to have facilitated conversations with your loved ones. If you have any questions, please call Sister Patty Creedon at (510) 534-8540 or Anita Ramlo at (510) 534-3637. Dr. Rubin is a clinical ethicist and co-founder of The Ethics Practice, a firm devoted to providing bioethics education, research, and clinical consultation on a national basis. She is consulting ethicist to the Elder Care Alliance Ethics and Social Justice Committee. Dr. Londerville is the Medical Director of Salem Lutheran Home. She is a member of the Elder Care Alliance Ethics and Social Justice Committee. Outstanding examples of visual art decorated the Salem Lutheran Home halls in October, as professional artists, residents and students from a nearby school collaborated on an Art Festival for All Ages. Residents and students not only created the art, but they helped with the displays. From kindergarten through high school, students from the Head Royce School in Oakland shared their artistic expression. Residents reciprocated with watercolors, quilts, collages, poems, sculpture and drawings. "We wanted to provide an opportunity for residents to share their talents. We also wanted to bring the community on to campus, to brighten and enliven our days. The children really shared their joy," said Anita Ramlo, Salem administrator. "We look forward to expanding this program beyond the visual arts -- to encompass music and other forms of expression." To close the exhibit, Pastor Marty Schaefer led a vespers service, with harpist Natalie Cox accompanying, on the theme of world peace.
